We see Jan Eymael when we park the car. Relaxed he shows us his domain. This place has quite some history. The family grows wine for centuries, the mythical unicorn of the logo is donated by Emperor Ferdinand the second in 1622. When we arrive in his garden, which is also planted with vines, he tells us we are actually on an old graveyard. I see images of Michael Jackson dancing Thriller in front of me, but Jan assures me the church has broken down two centuries ago and the dead are at rest since then. The only thing which remembers of the church is the big bell hanging outside at the entrance. The beautiful old house where the church once stood is being rebuilt and prepared for John and his family to live the house of his grandfather. By the way, grandfather is still alive, which means that there are four generations living on this estate.Internships in California and AustraliaJan was 18 when he decided to take over the winery, he had an internship in California as well as in Australia. His wife felt so much in love with Australia they almost stayed there. During his internships, he, like many young German winemakers abroad, were taught to focus on a select number of varieties instead of many. Quality always comes first. Pfeffingen is known for the Scheurebe (a combination of Riesling and Silvaner). His grandfather discovered this grape and since then the Scheurebe is the flagship of Pfeffingen. Unfortunately, we are not able to taste this wine, because the it is already sold out.A visit to Weingut Pfeffingen with a tour of Jan is worth the trip for sure.Opening hoursMonday / Friday from 8.00 to 12.00 and from 13.00 to 18.00Saturday from 9.00 to 12.00 and from 13.00 to 16.00Sundays and holidays you have to make an appointmentv
