Schloss Schönborn's history goes back to 1349. It is the oldest winery in the world that is headed by the same family (for 27 generations). The oldest drinkable wine has been traced back to 1735 and was auctioned in 1987. The question is whether this is actually drinkable, I am afraid we will never know. So much for the history lesson.
'The founding of Hattenheim'There are several locations including the home domain Pommersfelden. There is an immense castle. We are at the winery in the village Hattenheim. When we ask if we can taste some wine, a woman shows up to lead us around. In a room decorated like we are back two hundred years ago (not matching the modern building it is in) we get to taste different wines. The lady let us taste excellent pure wines (Riesling, of course). She is very friendly and tells us at what other vineyards we still have to go (Schloss Johannisberg and Schloss Vollrads).CellarsThen we go down to the old cellars together with the cellar master. He tells us about the special, old, decorated wooden barrels and the old wines they keep in the special treasure chamber. The oldest bottles are save behind an iron gate, only the duchess has a key (to bad for us).A nice visit with excellent wines.
