Right next to the very professional winery Akarua in Otago, is the small, but cozy Bannockbrae Estate. An older couple has this winery established in 1997. Their house overlooks their own vineyards. The table on their terrace is the ‘Tasting room’. It was a lovely spot. We had to pass the living room to get there. The dog Rocky noses around and lays down beside the table. The lady of the house talks freely about fulfilling their dreams with this winery. She tells the vine stocks come from California and why roses grow at the end of the vine rows, but also that the windmills stand in the fields to ensure that the frost stays away. Besides we had a delicious Pinot Noir, we discovered the surprise of this holiday a Goldfields Dry Riesling 2009. None of the Rieslings we drank matched this one. Perhaps it had to do with the relaxed atmosphere and nice people. Next to wine they also sell olive oil of befriended farmers. The oil was just as delicious.
